Pranayama Exercises & Benefits - Urdhvareta Pranayama

Pranayama Benefits: This pranayama has immense remedial value as it is believed to remove all diseases. It purifies all the nadis. With regular practice the purification of the nadis sets in and continues having an invigorating effect on the entire body. It improves all the systems of the body like digestive system, increases the digestive fire and improves appetite, revitalizes the nervous system, improves brain functioning and increases the power of concentration. It also helps in maintaining Bramacharya or celibacy. It also awakens the Kundalini.

Pranayama Technique:

Sitting down stretch both the legs forward.

Now place the heel of the left foot on the mooladhar, which is near the anus and press it with the heel.

Raise the right foot and place it on the left thigh with the heel on the thigh joint.

This final posture is very close to Siddhasana.

Concentrate the attention on the navel.

Closing the left nostril with the little and ring fingers, inhale with the right nostril so that the air is filled in the abdomen.

Perform kumbhak till the body can take it comfortably.

Close the right nostril with the thumb and exhale extremely slowly with the left nostril.

Then draw the air through the right nostril and repeat the process.

All the above processes make up for Urdhvareta pranayama.

This complete pranayama exercise should be performed for seven times.
