WOMEN’S RIGHTS
“A fight for rights which are truly ours,
Treat us as humans, not as inanimate stars.”
The modern world has witnessed a rising growth of feminism or a movement for women’s liberation. The basic aim of this movement is a demand for equal rights of women along with a basic demand for women to be looked upon as humans and not as patriarchal objects of desire.
Long tired of being passive receptors of injustice, women have given up their passive, submissive role to raise a voice for their own rights. It was in this regard that United Nations had observed 1975 as International Women’s Year by adopting international laws and treaties on women’s rights. One of the important treatises adopted in 1979 was the Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women by ensuring women’s equal rights of growth in public and political life. Moreover, the Commission on the Status of Women was one of the first bodies established by the UN Economic and Social Council in 1946 to monitor the situation of women by promoting their rights all across the globe. In addition, there are many committed organizations in India like The National Commission For Women, SEWA, AIDWA and others who are responsible for looking after the welfare of Indian women. However, after so many years, women are still seen as fighting for their basic social rights. No doubt, women have attained important positions in the social, economic and political domains of society, but they are still lacking the basic right of being treated as respectable human beings. This can be seen by the growing physical, moral and psychological violence on women as witnessed through the growing rape and murder cases across the nation. The need of the hour demands a basic change in perception regarding the status of women. Instead of characterizing her as either an ‘angel’ or a ‘whore’, women need to be perceived as humans first who have the same capability and talent to stand at par with men.
