Weight Gain during Menopause

July 22, 2009

menopausalweightgainA majority of women nearing their menopausal stage will find themselves battling not only hot flashes and night sweats, but also extra flab on their body. This is because women nearing menopause or women who have had menopause often put on extra fat around their abdominal region.

When a woman approaches her menopausal age, it becomes difficult to keep her weight under check. While it is not necessary that all women will put on weight during their menopausal years, this phenomenon is seen in a majority of women. There are various reasons for this as mentioned below.

To begin with, when a woman ages, the muscles in the body get replaced by fat and there is a general slowing down of metabolism.  One of the prime causes for difficulty in managing weight during menopause is fluctuation in hormones.

When a woman enters her menopausal stage, there are various kinds of hormonal changes in her body. Hormones in turn play a role in your body’s metabolism and fat storage and thus, any kind of hormonal fluctuation can lead to weight gain in the body.

While it is true that hormones and slowing down of your body’s metabolism are responsible for weight gain during menopause, this does not imply that this problem is inevitable. You can control your weight through proper lifestyle changes.

Eat a balanced diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid fast and junk food and also avoid crash diets. You need to remain active. This is because exercise and physical activity helps in keeping one’s weight under check.

Along with the above factors, you should also avoid stress as stress is another factor that can lead to weight gain.

Thus, always remember that though weight gain is common during menopausal age, one can always try to remain fit and healthy.
