Ways to Stop Nail Biting

February 3, 2009

Do you often find your nails between your teeth prior to exams, results, job interview, important meeting or during any stressed out moment? Stress is a major factor which leads to nail biting in many people. The result is that you are left with bitten down nails which are not only ugly to look at, but are also extremely unhygienic.

This is because when you put your nails between your teeth, you are subjecting your body to intake of various bacteria and infections. Thus, getting rid of this bad habit is a must. While it is rightly said that bad habits are easier to adopt and difficult to give up, you have to make conscious effort to get over this habit. Given below are some ways which can help you get rid of nail biting.

Usually people who bite their nails are unaware during the nail biting process. That is to say, that many people involuntary bite their nails in moments of stress. While nail biting might be involuntary, you need serious conscious effort to ensure that those nails do not enter your mouth. Keep reminding yourself of the various health and beauty drawbacks of nail biting.

Remind yourself after every few moments and once you start making a conscious effort, you’ll realize that it is not that difficult. You can keep your nails polished and also wear gloves to prevent nail biting. If your child is suffering from this problem, then take measures to stop it from the beginning itself. Every time your child bites nails, you should restrict him from doing so.

While making a conscious effort is the first and foremost way to stop nail biting, you can also try to reduce your stress level via yoga and meditation so that you eradicate the root cause which usually leads to nail biting. Follow these steps to control your unhealthy habit so that you have long, beautiful nails and a healthy and hygienic body.
