Ways to Deal with a Dislocated Shoulder

June 13, 2009

dislocatedshoulderDislocated shoulders can be extremely painful and can affect your shoulder’s mobility. As the name suggests, dislocated shoulder is a condition in which the upper arm bone gets dislocated from its socket.

This in turn leads to immense pain, inflammation, numbness and difficulty moving the affected joint. A dislocated shoulder is usually caused by injuries and accidental falls. Given below are some helpful tips for taking care of a dislocated shoulder.

If you suffer from a dislocated shoulder, then you must provide adequate rest to your injured arm. Do not over exert it as that can worsen the condition. A dislocated shoulder takes time to heal and you should take extra precaution during the healing period. You can wear a sling to avoid excessive movement of the affected shoulder.

A dislocated shoulder often gets inflamed. You can naturally reduce this inflammation by applying ice on it. Ice treatment can be used for the initial 2 to 3 days of the injury and after that you can use heat treatment which involves application of heat pad on the affected area.

If your pain increases and becomes unbearable, then you can use certain pain killers. There are also certain injections that can help alleviate the pain associated with dislocated shoulder.

In addition, mild exercises and physiotherapy can also help as it helps in improving the flexibility of the shoulder, preventing them from becoming stiff. Stretching exercises can help. However, you must consult your doctor before undertaking any major physical activity.

Along with taking the above given tips, you should also try to prevent the problem of dislocated shoulders. If you play sports, then you should wear a protective gear to avoid injuries. In addition, keep your shoulders strong and flexible through regular exercises.

Thus follow the above given tips to effectively deal with the problem of dislocated shoulder.
