Walking

June 25, 2008

Walk towards a longer and a healthier life.
With the growing development and advancement of our nation when new technologies and instruments for work-outs are available, one tends to forget the simple and basic benefits of walking. Walking is the most simple and effective mode of exercise which can be undertaken by everyone including pregnant women, elderly people as well as by those suffering from diseases like arthritis, diabetes or osteoporosis. Moreover, more than an exercise, walking can be seen as a healthy mode of recreation when one can walk in the company of his near and dear ones and can also simultaneously enjoy the freshness of nature.

Analyzing its benefits, one can look at walking as a daily prescription for a healthy and a happy life. It’s benefits include keeping one’s weight in check, one’s blood pressure in check, reducing the risk of bone loss and also helps in increasing mobility for people with arthritis. Moreover, walking also boosts up the level of “good” cholesterol or HDL (High Density Lipoproteins) in the blood which in turn helps to keep heart diseases in check. According to a research, brisk walking for three hours a week can lead to a 30-40% reduction of the risk factor of heart diseases in women. In addition, The Nurses’ Health Study also links regular activity of walking as a means to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women. Walking is the best way to lose weight as the faster one walks, the more calories one burns.

Along with keeping the body fit and healthy, walking also helps to refresh one’s mind and spirit. It can have major emotional benefits which include countering depression, relieving stress and increasing one’s physical and mental stamina. Proper posture is advised during walking which includes standing up straight with ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankle in a vertical line. Leaning forward during walking is not a good idea as it can lead to back strain.

Walking thus is the best medicine which has no side-effects. Though simple and basic, it plays a pivotal role in keeping one healthy and fit. So just walk over your diseases and live a happy and a longer life.
