Verbal Abuse in Relationships

August 13, 2009

verbalabuseIt is said that words once spoken can never be taken back. It takes years to build a relationship and just few words can break it or leave everlasting cracks and fissures in it.

Verbal abuse refers to certain comments or degrading or harsh words that can lead to a sense of betrayal, hurt and depression in a person at whom the words were directed.

Verbal abuse does not lead to any physical injury. However, it leads to emotional or psychological scars.

Verbal abuse is as serious an offence in a relationship as is physical abuse. In fact, verbal abuse can be seen as more damaging than physical abuse because unlike the physical scars that get healed with time, emotional scars caused by verbal abuse last for a lifetime and can have further repercussions.

They can shatter the self image and confidence of the victim and make him feel worthless.

Verbal abuse not only leads to emotional upheavals and scars, it also makes you vulnerable to physical illness over a period of time.

When a person suffers from ongoing abuse, he lives in a condition of chronic stress which in turn adversely affects the immune system and makes the person vulnerable to illnesses.

If you are verbally abused in a relationship, you must take action. Don’t be a passive victim. Instead, you should ask your abuser to stop his abusive behavior and you should also take help of your friends and relatives.

Usually, in marital relationships, men consider it as their right to dominate women and utter harsh words to them to keep them subordinated. However, as a woman, you need to revolt this behavior and let your abuser know that it is not his right to demean you through words.

You must try to put an end to verbal abuse in a relationship as the pain and trauma caused by it can be detrimental to your overall health- be it emotional or physical.
