Urinary Tract Infections in Women

November 5, 2008

A urinary tract infection is usually caused by bacteria and it can occur in any part of the urinary system like kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Women are at greater risk of developing urinary tract infection than men because bacteria can reach the bladder more easily in women. The urethra is shorter in women than in men, so bacteria have a shorter distance to travel. Given below are some symptoms, treatment and preventive measures for this infection.

Possible signs and symptoms of urinary tract infection include a burning sensation while urinating, an urge to urinate more frequently, leaking of a little urine and also cloudy, dark or bloody urine. Usually, people suffering from UTI have a strong urge to urinate that cannot be delayed and which is followed by a sharp pain or burning sensation in the urethra when the urine is released. Nausea, lower back pain and fever may be signs of a kidney infection. It has been found that women who change sexual partners or begin having sexual intercourse more frequently may experience bladder or urinary tract infections more often than women in monogamous relationships. Other factors which increase a woman’s chances of developing this infection are pregnancy, menopause and even diabetes.

Urinary tract infection can be prevented by taking some precautionary measures. These include drinking plenty of water to flush out bacteria. Don’t hold your urine. Urinate when you feel like you need to. Also urinate after having sex to help wash away bacteria. Urinary tract infections can be painful and they require proper medical attention to prevent them from becoming serious. These infections are usually treated with antibiotics that cause the symptoms to quickly disappear. Thus, take precautions to prevent UTI and if the infection happens, it should be immediately treated through medical assistance.
