Understanding Multiple Personality Disorder

March 18, 2009

If you have just met a person who changes his personality and behavioral traits frequently and in seconds, then that person might be suffering from multiple personality disorder. Also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder or DID, multiple personality disorder is a psychotic problem characterized by a simultaneous existence of multiple personalities and identities in a single person.

All psychological problems have an underlying cause to it which most people tend to neglect. One needs to understand those underlying causes to effectively deal with people affected by Multiple Personality Disorder. The major causes usually linked with this problem include childhood abuse, be it emotional, physical, or sexual; some malfunctioning of the brain; and can also be caused due to immense stress and traumatic situations. More often than not, it is some kind of childhood traumatic experience which leaves its mark on the later life of the person, often forcing him to build imaginary personalities of himself to get rid of harsh realities.

As the name suggests, Multiple Personality Disorders is a problem in which a person switches between various kinds of personalities, often conflicting ones, in a span of few moments. This can occur due to any trigger as mentioned above. People suffering from this problem often don’t have control over their behavior and personality. There is a feeling of dissociation between their mind and body. Additionally, most of the time the switching of personalities is triggered by an emotional or physical factor, often not in the control of the suffering person.

It has also been found that when people suffer from other personalities dominating and subduing their original one, they seldom remember most of the things they did in their subconscious or alter personality. There are various kinds of treatments available for treating this problem ranging from medications to alternate treatments like yoga, breathing exercises, and other psychological treatments.
