Understanding Dyslexia
July 26, 2008
The term dyslexia has become familiar with Aamir Khan’s movie ‘Tare Zameen Par’ which has been successful in bringing to light the harsh but true difficulties which a child with dyslexia has to face in this competitive and cruel world. However, unlike the support and help which the dyslexic child gets in the movie, the real world is much cruel and harsh to live in. Dyslexia is a learning disability in children due to which the child finds difficulty in attaining language skills of reading, writing and spelling. This is caused by impairment in the brain’s ability to translate images received from the eyes or ears into understandable language. However, this is not because of mental retardation, brain damage or lack of intelligence and thus labeling such children as dumb, stupid and fools is nothing but ignorance combined with intolerance.
Dyslexic people often face the problem of understanding words and multiple instructions. They often reverse letters and words and have difficulty in understanding left from right. There are different types of dyslexia which can affect the child’s ability to spell as well as read. These include Trauma dyslexia, primary dyslexia, developmental dyslexia and visual dyslexia. The problems created by this ailment ranges from impaired hearing, emotional immaturity, inadequate reading instruction to various psychological and behavioral problems. Such children generally display symptoms like facing difficulties in writing and spelling, writing letters or numbers backwards, difficulty with organizing themselves and inability to understand multiple instructions at one go. Unfortunately, these children get rejected in the fast world of today due to which they become emotionally and psychologically insecure.
The causes of dyslexia are still uncertain but what is known is the adverse affect which the dyslexic child has to face as they are considered as incapable and slow despite being intellectually sound. Many people have a wrong perception that dyslexia is a mental disability. These children can be treated by giving them extra time and attention along with focusing on their special abilities which can help them to overcome their disability. Most importantly, such children need support from their near and dear ones so as to avoid other psychological and behavioral problems which can occur due to public rejection and humiliation.

I must say Taare Zammen Pe..did open up a complete new horizon for the society.
