Understanding Baby Acne

September 5, 2008

One must have often heard of the problem of acne in teenagers, adults and in people of all gender. However, baby acne sounds unfamiliar as nobody expects small babies to be affected by problems like acne. So what exactly is baby acne? Baby acne is broadly defined as the inflammation of white heads, black heads and red pimples over the body of your baby. Generally occurring on face, arms, buttocks, shoulders and legs of the baby; small babies can suffer from various kinds of acne like Neonata milia, Neonatal acne and infantile acne. While Neonatal acne occurs at the time of birth, Neonata milia appear as typical pimples in infants and infantile acne can occur in babies with less than four years of age.

Baby acne can be caused due to changes in hormonal level, bad nutrition and greasy or oily skin. Drugs taken by nursing mother can also trigger the problem of baby acne. This is not a rare problem as many babies suffer from this. The pimples are most prominent when the child is angry or cranky as that leads to an increased blood flow to the skin. Baby acne is usually characterized by cysts, scarring of the skin, blackheads, whiteheads and inflammation around skin eruptions. You should not take any risk with child’s sensitive skin and before trying any remedy or treatment, it is always advisable to consult your doctor.

By following certain hygienic guidelines, you can prevent your child from developing this irritable problem of baby acne. Preventive measures include restraining your child from sleeping on dirty pillows; increasing the child’s intake of fresh fruit juices and water; avoiding squeezing or picking the acne and other basic hygienic measures. Baby acne is a problem which automatically disappears after some time. There are various medications and creams available for this purpose but always consult a doctor before using them as a child’s skin is very sensitive which should not be played with.
