Understanding Autoimmune Disorders
We all are aware of the importance of having a healthy immune system. Our immune system shields us from various infections and ailments. However, our immune system can sometimes become our enemy too and when this happens, the immune system starts attacking its own body organs and parts.
Thus, diseases and disorders caused by immune system are referred to as autoimmune disorders.
You might wonder as to why your immune system attacks your own body? The reason is that sometimes our immune system mistakes body’s own tissues and parts as something “foreign and alien” and thus attacks them.
As mentioned above, autoimmune disorders happen when a person’s immune system creates antibodies that attack cells, tissues, and organs of one’s own body.
Research is still going on to find out the exact causes of autoimmune disorders but it is believed that certain genetic factors can lead to this problem. This problem can be inherited and thus if a family member suffers from any autoimmune disorder, then it makes the offspring vulnerable to such diseases.
After having understood the meaning of autoimmune disorders, let’s look at some examples of autoimmune disorders. Rheumatoid arthritis is one such common autoimmune disease which leads to inflammation of joints.
Other examples of autoimmune disorders include sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, Addison’s disease, pernicious anemia, and skin problems like psoriasis amongst others.
A person can suffer from more than one autoimmune disorder. Thus, a person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can suffer from another autoimmune disease like Addison’s disease. Every autoimmune disorder brings with it its own set of symptoms. One should recognize the symptoms in time and get it checked by the doctor.
There is no definitive preventive method or cure for autoimmune disorders. The treatment given is basically to provide relief from the various symptoms that each autoimmune disorder brings with it.
