Treatment for Frostbite

September 10, 2008

With the thought of approaching cold winters, one often thinks about frostbite which is a state of temporary or permanent tissue damage due to exposure to extreme cold weathers. Frostbites are preventable and even treatable and they should be treated on time to prevent the progress of frostbites into dead tissues, hypothermia, and even cardiac arrest. In extreme cold conditions, blood vessels narrow down causing tissue injury and if not treated, it can lead to nerve damage. Thus, follow the given methods to prevent and treat the problem of frostbites so that you can remain healthy without the threat of ailments.

Frostbites are characterized by gradual numbness, hardness of skin, pale colored affected parts, blisters, shivering and slurred speech. If no tissue has died or irreversibly damaged, then such kind of minor frostbites can be treated at home. This involves immersing the affected area in warm water; drinking warm fluids with high sugar content; covering the affected areas with cloth bandages and keeping the damaged area raised than the other parts. Never massage the area affected by frostbite and don’t use warm water immediately when frostbite is apparent as that can cause further injury. For serious cases, immediate medical attention should be sought to prevent permanent damages to tissues and nerves.

Frostbite is a condition which can be prevented if proper precaution is taken. When traveling out in cold weather, keep your body protected through extra layers of clothes. If your clothes get wet, remove and change them as soon as possible since skin freezes twice as fast when covered with wet clothes. Drink adequate amounts of liquids when outdoors and keep your body in motion so as to encourage blood flow. All these preventive measures would help you in protecting yourself from the problem of frostbites.
