Treating Myopathy
October 23, 2008
Myopathy is a neuromuscular disease which affects the function of the muscle fibres. There are many reasons that can count for this. A person who is suffering from Myopathy experiences severe weakness in the muscles. Apart from this, the patient also experiences stiffness and cramps in the muscles. This could be painful.
Although it is referred to as a Neuro disease, the problem occurs in the muscles and not in the nerves. There are several types of Myopathy. A few of them are listed below.
They are congenital Myopathy, neuromyotonia, mitochondrial myopathies, familial periodic paralysis, glycogen storage diseases of muscle myoglobinurias dermatomyositis, myositis ossificans and polymyositis. Others are muscular dystrophies, inclusion body myositis, and related myopathies, common muscle cramps and stiffness, stiff-man syndrome, and tetany.
Treatment
The type of treatment depends upon causes of the Myopathy. It is also important to take into consideration the condition of the patient when deciding on the treatment. It should be clear that there is no complete cure for the disease. What is done is to treat the symptoms to relieve the patient of the pain.
Generally, the symptoms are not fatal. Therefore patients can lead long lives. In certain cases, the symptoms are so mild that the patient does not feel it much. But there could be cases where the symptoms progress to become very severe and even fatal. That is why it is necessary to have an effective treatment as early as possible. Treatment options are medication, physiotherapy and surgery
Medications are use to relieve the pains and the crumps. Physical therapy includes moving the affected muscle, acupressure and massage. Supportive braces may also be used on the affected muscles. This facilitates limited movement. Rest is needed as the patient of Myopathy experiences severe weakness. For the many people suffering from this disease, providing symptomatic relief is very useful.
Hope
However, there is a lot of research going on around the world to find the right treatment and if possible cure for this disease. Let us keep hoping that a cure will be found for Myopathy very soon.
