Toxic Shock Syndrome

July 25, 2008

One might have not heard much about Toxic Shock Syndrome as it is a rare but a life-threatening which is caused by toxins that circulate in the bloodstream. It can develop suddenly after an infection and rapidly affect several organ systems like lungs, kidneys and liver. People with toxic shock syndrome develop problems or symptoms like high fever, rashes, low blood pressure, diarrhea and even failure of multiple organ systems in the body. Since this problem progresses quickly, immediate medical attention is needed to prevent fatal consequences.

Toxin Shock Syndrome is caused by toxins produced by bacteria which get released into the bloodstream leading to an over stimulation of the immune system. The toxins released are from special and rare bacteria, especially by Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep) or Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria. While Strep TSS occurs mostly after childbirth, flu or minor cuts and injuries, Staph TSS can occur after a prolonged use of a tampon (menstrual TSS) or after a surgical procedure. TSS can become a serious and a deadly problem within 2 days as the symptoms of this problem spread quickly thereby affecting the entire body within a couple of days. The symptoms generally include muscle aches, pain, cramps, sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and as the name suggests it also leads to signs of shock like low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, restlessness and confusion.

Since this problem can be life-threatening, people suffering from Toxic Shock Syndrome require immediate medical care. Emergency treatment for such patients often requires intravenous fluid replacement and hospital intensive care, especially when the body goes into shock. Generally, if the patient is brought to hospital on time, he can get treated with 1 to 2 weeks of antibiotic treatment. One should not take this problem lightly as it can rapidly throw one’s happy life into the abyss of darkness.
