Toe Nail Fungus

September 8, 2008

If your toes are frequently exposed to warm, moist conditions like sweaty shoes; then chances of your suffering from toe nail fungus is very high. As the name suggests, nail fungus is a problem caused by fungi and it usually begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your toe nail. With time, the nail fungus spreads deeper into the nail causing discoloration of nails and also thickening and development of crumbling edges which leads to pain and discomfort along with being unsightly. This is a contagious disease and it can also be hereditary.

Toe nail fungus is primarily caused due to exposure of toes to damp areas like public gyms, or swimming pools and also due to wearing of sweaty shoes. It is also contagious and can spread by coming in contact with an infected person. There are other reasons also for this skin problem like abnormal pH level of the skin, hereditary and poor immune system. Also known as onychomycosis, toe nail fungus is broadly characterized by thickened, brittle or crumbly nails; and by the discoloration and disfiguration of them.

Since it is difficult to treat toe nail fungus due to its stubborn nature, one should try to take certain precautions to prevent this problem. This includes wearing protective shoes or sandals in public showers, pool areas and gyms; keeping foot dry and avoiding wearing of sweaty and tight shoes. Keep toe nails trimmed and ensure proper feet hygiene for the prevention of nail fungus. If you are suffering from this problem, then you should consult your doctor for medications. In addition, certain home made remedies are also available like the treatment through tea tree oil, lavender oil and even olive oil. Whatever be the mode of treatment, it is necessary to get rid of this problem so as to keep your feet healthy and hygienic.
