Tips on Public Speaking

March 23, 2009

Are you afraid of speaking in public, especially before a large audience? There are many amongst us who are knowledgeable and intelligent but afraid of displaying their talent in public. However, you need to overcome your fear and stage fright to be able to effectively face an audience and speak confidently.

To overcome public speaking fear, you need to have confidence in yourself and in your abilities. And this confidence stems from preparation. Be well prepared and rehearse well before the final day. When you have to deliver a speech or a presentation, you must be well prepared for it. Practice well as that helps in gradual build up of confidence. You can also practice in the room in which you have to deliver a speech or a presentation. That is to say, come early, acquaint yourself with the surroundings and try rehearsing on the stage and with the mike and visual aid so that the place does not feel alien to you when you deliver your much awaited speech.

Have confidence in your ability. You are the chosen one who is delivering a speech for people to hear. You should be proud of this and grab the opportunity to deliver your best rather than shying away or letting your nervous energies make a mess of the situation. It is said that if you are overwhelmed by an extreme amount of nervous energy, then you must give it an outlet through some exercise like spot jogging or any other movement that relaxes and calms you down.

Drink a sip of water and calm yourself down before moving on to the stage.  Also, visualize yourself as a positive, confident person delivering a public speech of high quality which is being praised by all. This will give you the encouragement and confidence to move forward.

Thus, try the given tips for effective public speaking.
