Tips on Preventing Breast Cancer

October 29, 2008

Your most dreaded breast cancer can be prevented. Surprised? But it’s actually true. Given below are some simple yet effective tips which can help you live a healthy life without the fear of breast cancer.

You might think that age and genetic makeup are some things you can’t change and these usually lead to breast cancer. While this is true, there is another fact that breast cancer can be protected by living a healthy lifestyle. First of all, maintain a healthy body weight throughout your life. Weight gain in midlife has shown to significantly increase breast cancer risk. Thus avoid excessive junk food and instead adopt the healthy diet consisting of as many fruits and vegetables as possible. Diet for breast cancer prevention includes all cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower); dark leafy greens (collards, kale, spinach); carrots and tomatoes. It is best to eat cruciferous vegetables raw or lightly cooked, as some of the phytochemicals which provide protection against breast cancer are destroyed by heat. Also consume whole food soy products regularly, such as tofu, tempeh, edamame, roasted soy nuts, soy milk and miso. Along with eating vegetables, you need to minimize or avoid alcohol intake. Not to forget, you need to follow healthy diet with regular exercise to prevent your body from breast cancer. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. If you haven’t been particularly active in the past, start your exercise program slowly and gradually work up to a greater intensity. Remember, you need to be consistent and regular in your exercise regime to gain maximum benefits. Last but not the least, minimize exposure to pharmacologic estrogens and xeno-estrogens. Also avoid estrogen-like compounds found in environmental pollutants, such as pesticides and industrial chemicals.

Follow these simple tips and keep yourself protected from breast cancer.
