Tips on Choosing the Right Sunscreen

December 2, 2008

We have all heard about the harmful effects of sun and its UV rays on our skin and the importance of sunscreens. However, many of us get confused while buying sunscreens and end up buying the wrong one. Given below are certain tips which would assist you in choosing the appropriate sunscreen for maximum protection.

Who would like to walk around with freckles, age spots, premature wrinkles and fine lines? Ideally none of us. Thus, you need to protect your skin from the harmful effects of sun by choosing the right sunscreen for your skin. Moreover, even if it is winters or cloudy, it does not imply that you won’t be affected by sun. After all, sun and its harmful rays are present even if you can’t see them. When we buy sunscreens we usually talk of SPF. Let’s understand what that means. SPF approximately tells us about the percentage of UVB rays that are being blocked by that particular sunscreen. SPF 15 blocks about 93%, SPF 30 about 97% and SPF 50 blocks about 99% of the harmful rays. Thus choose according to your requirement, particularly keeping in mind the amount of time you spend in sun and the magnitude of sunrays in your area. However, minimum SPF must be 15. Usually, lotions are a combination of sunscreens and sunblocks. But, if you have sensitive skin, then you should go in for sunblocks only with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Look for a brand with broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Also ensure that your sunscreen is water resistant and it is not necessary for them to be waterproof. Also ensure that the lotion you are buying for sun protection is hypo-allergenic, fragrance-free, and PABA free.

The given tips will help you buy a sunscreen which provides the maximum protection in a safe way.
