Thyroid Disorders in Women
Thyroid is an important gland in the body which is involved in secretion of important hormones, along with aiding in bone growth and regulation of body heat. However, there are many disorders relating to the malfunctioning of the thyroid gland and usually, these problems occur more in women. However, they can occur in men too, but on an average, the number of women affected by thyroid disorders is more than their male counterparts.
While thyroid is a common problem, it is not usually diagnosed on time as it displays symptoms which are also characteristic of some other ailments. Thus, understanding your symptoms well is the first step towards timely detection and even prevention of thyroid disorders. However, before moving ahead, let’s look at how a thyroid disorder can affect a woman’s life.
Women show a higher risk of hypothyroidism than men. In the early stage of the problem, symptoms which are displayed are weight gain, fatigue, swelling, hair loss, depression, dry skin, irregular periods, and others. Similarly, hyperthyroidism too is a thyroid disorder which can lead to symptoms like hot flashes, loss of weight, insomnia and mood swings amongst others.
Since any sort of thyroid disorder is linked with hormonal imbalance, it can have various effects on a woman’s body. It can lead to irregular and abnormal menstrual periods with excessive or very little bleeding. Ovaries too get affected and if a woman has hypothyroidism, the chance of cyst formation increases.
In addition, an overactive or under active thyroid functioning also affects the ovulation process in a woman’s body. If you are pregnant, then too thyroid disorder is harmful as it can harm the fetus. Also, women with thyroid malfunctioning have early onset of menopause than others. To avoid any complication and to lead a healthy life, it is essential to get this problem detected and treated on time.
