Thrush in Babies

October 13, 2008

A yeast infection, thrush is common in newborn babies. It usually happens when the baby is up to three to four weeks old. As the baby grows, the chances of his being infected by thrush decreases. Children who are born with healthy immune system easily ward off this problem. Read below to find out more about the causes, symptoms and treatment of thrush in babies.

You can identify a thrush infection by finding thrush which resembles like a white sticky material on the sides and sometimes even on the tongue of a baby’s mouth. It generally makes the baby’s mouth sore. Babies are generally prone to this infection due to weak immune system. It can also be caused due to hormonal changes leading to overgrowth of yeast in baby’s mouth. Antibiotics taken by the mother during breastfeeding can also affect the child by killing off the bacteria which keeps yeast under check. Babies can also get infected during delivery if the mother has a vaginal yeast infection. Similarly, a baby’s mouth is more apt to become infected with thrush if rubber nipples are handled carelessly.

Thrush can be prevented by ensuring high hygienic levels. Do not let family members or visitors put their finger’s in the newborn’s mouth. If you are bottle-feeding, make sure that you boil the bottles and nipples to sterilize them so as to prevent infection. Also make it a point to wash your hands before feeding the baby. However, despite following all hygienic conditions, there are instances when the baby still gets infected by yeast. Treatment then requires certain creams which are prescribed by the doctor. take preventive measures and if your child still gets thrush, then consult a doctor for treatment so that the baby can be comfortable and healthy as soon as possible.
