Despite its name, Tennis Elbow is not a disorder which is restricted to sportsmen only as many common people including women can get affected by it. Tennis Elbow, also known as Lateral Epicondylitis, is a kind of swelling of the tendons that causes pain in the elbow and arm. Generally attributed to the overstraining of muscles, Tennis Elbow develops over a period of time and is linked with repetitive motions which can put strain on the tendons eventually causing microscopic tears in the tissue. Generally affecting sportsmen involved in tennis, squash or cricket, it can also affect people with jobs requiring repetitive movement like typing, painting, carpentry and others.
Tennis Elbow is usually associated with an increasing pain on the outer side of the elbow which can further radiate into the upper or lower arms. The pain caused by Tennis Elbow is experienced the most when one tries to lift up things with weight and during gripping. X-rays and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) are the common means of diagnosing the trouble of Tennis Elbow. While the ailment cannot be itself seen in an X-ray, the latter is important to rule out a possible injury in many cases.
Fortunately, in many cases, the ailment automatically heals on its own with simple home-made treatments which includes icing of the elbow, use of an elbow strap and by performing exercises which can help increase mobility and flexibility of the affected area. In addition, there is anti-inflammatory medication available along with the treatment through physiotherapy. It is only in extreme cases that a surgery is needed to release the tendon from the bone.
A large number of people with jobs related to computer operations run the risk of getting this ailment. This is due to the fact that in an attempt to achieve more, people generally keep performing a particular task with a repetitive use of fingers or wrist which puts them in the danger of getting a Tennis Elbow. It is thus always advisable to perform stretching exercises to give one’s muscles rest and relaxation. As it is rightly said that prevention is better than cure, one should take all possible precautions to live a healthy and a peaceful life.
