Tending to your Toddler’s Needs
July 1, 2008
Every stage of child’s development is characterized by the parent’s increasing happiness as well as concern for their child’s overall health and development. As infants turn into toddlers, parents are faced with the important task of tending to their specific needs and demands which are associated with this new stage.
Looking after his food habits
As your infant turns into a toddler, he moves from baby food to a more ‘regular’ table food. One should avoid giving one’s toddler low fat milk until he is at least two years old. Moreover, on an average your toddler should get 6 servings of grain, 2-3 servings of vegetables, 2-3 servings of fruits and 2 servings of protein food. Many parents crib that his child is not eating enough. However, if your toddler is growing normally and is physically active, then there is no need to worry.
Waiting to hear him
All parents love to hear their toddlers talk. However, if your toddler is not talking “well”, then one should not be hasty enough to label him as speech delayed. It is generally found that most toddlers begin to say mamma or papa between 7 and 15 months. They learn to say 4-6 words between 11 and 22 months and around 50 words around 18 and 27 months. Thus, parents should not be too hyper and eager and should give their children the required time to grow.
Temper Tantrums
Another important thing which parents need to take care of is the temper tantrums of their toddlers. This is common in this stage of their life as toddlers tend to get frustrated easily due to their inability to express their needs. As a parent, one needs to understand and anticipate the coming tantrums and thus take care to stop it before it occurs as some toddlers tend to get violent during temper tantrums. Moreover, parents should handle their toddlers with love and care but should be firm and should not give in to their tantrums.
Look after his safety
Parents need to be extra careful in terms of safety when their child turns into a toddler from an infant. Things like knives, match boxes and medicines which can harm them should be kept far from their reach.
Every stage of a child’s development requires love, care and caution from their parents as a child who grows in a happy and a safe shelter, grows up to become a successful human being.
