Teens and Parental Authority
Parental authority with teens has always led to some sort of discord, conflict and misunderstanding in a majority of household. The reason being that teenage time is a time of hormonal changes and a transitory period in the life of a teen when he stands at the cross road of adulthood and childhood. In this transitory phase of life, they suffer from their own set of challenges and thus any sort of parental authority is not taken in the right way. Parents often get confused as to how they should take care of their teens and in a matter of confusion, they often react in an aggressive way. However, as a parent you need to understand this delicate phase of your child and deal with it in a sensitive and intelligent way.
You must have noticed various teenagers reacting in an aggressive, angry way. This is because teenage time is a time when various kinds of physical, emotional, psychological and hormonal changes take place in a person’s body. The teenage is neither a child nor an adult and in this confused phase of life, he is in quest of his identity. Thus, any sort of authority displayed by a parent is taken in a negative way. As a parent, try to become a friend of your child rather than imposing your authority. However, this does not imply that you don’t keep a check on your child’s activity.
Keeping a check on your teenager is extremely important so as to prevent him from going astray. However, you need to teach your child as a friend more than a parent. After all, many cases of teenagers as drug addicts are a result of teenage tension combined with poor parenting. Communication is the best way to bridge the gap between parents and teenagers. Rather than just shouting at your teenage, communicate in a healthy way, listen to your teen’s problems and views, give him importance and most importantly, love him and take care of him as a friend.
