However, there is no fixed time period as to when a child begins teething as it varies child to child and is determined by various factors. However, while some children might experience very little pain, there are many who face a difficult time during the teething period. There are certain symptoms which will help you understand whether your child has begun teething or not. Usually the pain accompanied during teething makes the child irritable, cranky and restless. You can soothe your child’s sore gums by making him suck on chilled teething rings or water filled and chilled rubber teething toys. Providing your baby with a bottle of cold water can also provide relief along with helping in replenishing the baby’s fluid incase he is drooling a lot. Many parents have found that feeding the child with cold food items like yogurt and pureed peaches is also a beneficial way of helping ease the pain and discomfort of teething babies.
You can also help the child to cope with pain of coming tooth through simple massaging of his gums with your fingers. This helps in providing counter pressure thereby alleviating the tooth pain. There are various pain gels and medicines for small children available but they should be taken only after consultation with a doctor. After all, you should never take any sort of risk with the health and safety of a small child. Teething is a normal process of the growing up of a child.
