Symptoms of Teething in Babies

March 10, 2009

With the coming of a baby in the house, the entire focus of the house shifts on to him. And why not? After all, a new life brings with it a new leash of happiness and liveliness in the family. Every movement and stage of the child is looked at with anticipation, hope and care. One such stage is that of teething in babies.

Teething is a process through which teeth start appearing in babies. This process can be painful for some babies and some might develop teeth without any discomfort. However, to help the child with the teething process, it is necessary to be aware of its symptoms. Given below are some helpful teething symptoms generally witnessed in babies.

As mentioned above, the symptoms of teething vary from baby to baby. However, here are some generalized symptoms to help a parent understand whether his child is teething or not. Some babies become extremely cranky and irritable during the teething stage due to the irritation, discomfort, and pain involved in this process. However, there are also babies who easily cross this stage without major pain and discomfort.

Drooling is one of the main symptoms associated with the process of teething. If you see your child drooling more than usual, especially if he is between 4 and 7 months of age, then it can be a symptom of teething. Babies who are teething tend to bite and gnaw and put everything they come across in their mouth. Rashes around the chin region due to excessive drooling and tender gums are some other symptoms of teething in babies.

As mentioned before, the irritation and discomfort caused during the teething process often makes the baby cranky, restless and irritated. Some babies also develop fever but prolonged and unusual fever should be checked by a doctor.

Thus, as a parent, you must be aware of the various symptoms of teething in babies so that you can calm and soothe your baby during this stage of his life.
