Supplementary Foods for Infants

December 12, 2008

When it comes to small children and babies, parents are particularly excited as well as cautious at every stage of his development. One such stage is when your infant is given supplementary foods for the first time. Many infants are given some solid or semi-solid food by about three months or so. Given below are some tips on the kind of supplementary foods which should be introduced to an infant.

Cereals are the first semi solid foods that are given to the baby. When your child reaches 4 months, you can introduce formulated dry cereal foods. To infants of 3 to 5 months, you can also introduce hard cooked egg yolk mashed with a fork and mixed with a part of cereal or vegetable. However, first you need to give only a teaspoon of it so as to confirm whether your child is allergic to egg protein or not. By about 5 to 8 months, when the teeth begin to appear, certain solid and even crisp items can be given to the child. Ripe bananas, strained orange or grapefruit juice can also be permitted during the first year of the child. By the seventh month onwards, you can also start providing your child with mashed or baked potatoes. Strained carrots, green beans, spinach and tomatoes are suitable from the fourth month onwards.

You need to take follow certain tips while introducing new solid food to your child. While introducing new foods, you should introduce only one at a time. Allow the infant to become familiar with the food before trying to give another. Moreover, give very little amount of any new food at the beginning. If a baby has a dislike for certain food, omit it for a week and then retry giving it to him the next week. Never force an infant to eat more than he wills. Give freshly prepared foods and most importantly be patient and slowly teach your child to develop a taste for all nutritious food items.
