Stress Urinary Incontinence
There are many of us who suffer from the problem of accidental leakage of urine when one coughs, sneezes or even laughs. But, seldom do we report this problem to anyone due to inhibitions of shame. However, this is a medical problem termed as Stress urinary incontinence and according to research, women tend to suffer more from this problem than men.
As mentioned before, Stress urinary Incontinence is a problem which is characterized by involuntary leakage of urine whenever some pressure is applied by the abdomen, either through coughs, sneezes or any other physical exertion like exercises. This usually happens when there is a reduction in the strength of the muscles, especially the pelvic floor muscles that help in controlling urine.
There are various factors that increase the risk factor of getting stress urinary incontinence. These include childbirth, multiple pregnancies, chronic coughing, and even obesity. Though this problem can occur in any age, it is usually common in women in the age group of 35 and 60. Menopause is another cause which can lead to this problem.
After having looked at its causes and risk factors, let’s now look at the symptoms associated with this problem along with possible treatment options. The symptom of stress urinary incontinence is simple and direct- your bladder is unable to control the urine, often resulting in its accidental leakage whenever some pressure is exerted.
Though most of us suffering from this problem are ashamed to discuss the problem openly, it is essential for you to discuss this problem with your doctor for timely treatment. Certain lifestyle changes like making a sincere effort for weight reduction and giving up unhealthy habits of smoking can help in this problem. Also try to avoid caffeinated beverages. Additionally, there are also certain pelvic exercises designed especially for this purpose so that you can strengthen your pelvic muscles.
Along with the above mentioned natural treatment and prevention, the other modes of treatment for stress urinary incontinence range from medications to even surgery.
