Strep Throat

January 20, 2009

Common mostly in children and adolescents, strep throat is a common bacterial throat infection that can affect adults too. It is caused by Group A streptococcus and is a contagious infection. Given below are some causes and symptoms of strep throat.

Few general symptoms which are associated with strep throat include sore throat, difficulty in swallowing, sudden onset of fever, tender and swollen lymph glands, nausea, loss of appetite, rashes, nasal discharge and congestion amongst others. However, there are also some specific symptoms of strep throat which are associated with the kind of person being affected by it.

For instance, infants experience thick nasal discharge as the main symptom accompanied by others like decrease in appetite, low-grade fever, and even cranky and irritable behavior. When toddlers (aged one to three) get affected by strep throat, they display symptoms like sore throat, swollen glands and trouble swallowing food.

As mentioned above, strep throat is a contagious disease and is thus widespread among school children where a large number of students are present in an enclosed space. Since the bacteria causing strep throat is present in the nose and throat of the affected person, it can easily spread via hand shakes, sneezes, and coughs. Also, if you are sharing books or items of the affected person, there is a possibility of your catching the infection. Thus, it is important to take extra care and precaution to avoid the spread of infection.

There are certain self-care tips which should be followed for a fast relief from strep throat.  Drink plenty of fluids and keep your body hydrated. Gargling with salt water can provide relief to the aching throat. Certain herbal teas are also helpful. Usually children are fidgety by nature but you need to ensure that your child gets adequate sleep and rest along with proper and timely medication for a timely relief from the problem of strep throat.
