Stomach Cancer

November 24, 2008

As the name suggests, stomach cancer is the cancer of the stomach region often characterized by discomfort in the stomach region, nausea and vomiting, weight loss and also by a feeling of fullness after a small meal. However, these symptoms cannot be taken as benchmarks for cancer as other problems like ulcer can also lead to such symptoms. The exact cause of stomach cancer is not known and this cancer which originates in the stomach can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood stream. Though the exact cause of this cancer is still being investigated, there are certain factors which put you at a greater risk of developing stomach cancer. Given below are such high risk factors one should be aware of.

It has been found that a majority of people with stomach cancer are in the age group of 72 and higher. Moreover, men are more likely to develop this disease than women as seen by statistics. If your diet is rich in carbs and devoid of fruits and greens, then you are putting yourself at risk. Studies suggest that people who eat food items high in salt and pickled are at a higher risk of developing stomach cancer. Moreover, if you are fond of preserved foods and if you suffer from chronic peptic ulcers, then there are higher chances of your developing stomach cancer than others. There are also certain health problems which can lead to stomach cancer. These include stomach surgery, chronic gastritis, and also pernicious anemia. Endoscopy is a way by which you can get yourself diagnosed for stomach cancer. If diagnosed positively, you should get the required treatment as soon as possible to prevent further complications. Moreover, you should also change your diet and provide your body with fibers from vegetables, fruits, dried beans and whole wheat bread amongst others.
