October 1, 2008

As a parent, it is our desire to have a healthy and a fit baby. Hearing the first sound of baby provides immense happiness and joy to the entire family. However, life is not a bed of roses and there are many children who suffer from the problem of speech delays. This is basically a developmental disability found in almost 5-10% of children that causes a delay in their speech and language development. Remember that language involves more aspects than just speech- it involves sign language, writing and also visual skills. Parents are the ones who can notice whether their children are suffering from any such problem or not. If yes, they should seek advice to resolve the problem at the earliest. Read below and find out the signs and symptoms which are usually displayed by children suffering from speech delays.

Every stage of child is associated with levels of growth which can be analyzed properly to detect any possible problem. If your infant is between 12 to 24 months old, then reasons for concern include if he is not using gestures like pointing to things or waving by the age of 12 months. If by 18 months, your child prefers gestures over vocalizations or speech, then maybe he is suffering from some problem. Similarly, another warning sign is if your child has problem in imitating sounds by 18 months. You can also look at other signs to find out if your child is normal or not. Sign of speech delay in children include the difficulty of child in meeting his developmental milestones, inability to follow directions, slow and incomprehensible speech even after 3 years, and also problems faced by child in forming a complete or a proper sentence.

Lack of balanced diet, emotional stress, oral impairments, and even ear infections or hearing impairment are some of the causes associated with speech delays in children. If you find the above symptoms in your child, then you should consult a doctor to ensure proper health and development of your child.
