Sex Education in Children

November 24, 2008

Sex is a very sensitive topic which brings with it loads of mixed emotions- some view it as something bad, some as something extremely private which should not be discussed at all. These reactions are a result of various factors, be it social, religious and even psychological. However, as a parent, you need to ensure that your child has enough awareness about sex, its pros and cons, so that he does not go astray. With the growing awareness of AIDS and open talks on condoms, it becomes important for you as a parent to discuss sex properly with your child as half knowledge is always dangerous. After all, sex education will help your child remain safe from physical and psychological abuse. There is a lot of debate going on whether sex education should be started in schools as it is necessary for the child to prevent himself from sexual abuse and also from teen pregnancies which are at a rise. Many children and especially teens feel scared of discussing any sexual or biological problem with their parents due to the taboo attached with it. However, if your child will not be able to discuss freely with you, then he will have to adopt wrong means like pornography to gain knowledge. That too unfortunately is half and dangerous knowledge.

Sex education is necessary for the healthy development of a child. As a parent, you should discuss this sensitive topic as a matter of fact with your children without making them feel embarrassed or uncomfortable. It is only once you become their friend, that they will be able to discuss their problems and queries with you. This will help them have proper knowledge about the pros and cons of sex. Many children who do not get an outlet to their emotions resort to anger, fear and drug abuse. Conversation with your child is the only way to break the barrier and to ensure your child is given enough information to prevent him from sexual abuse, sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancies.
