Safety Tips while Cycling

September 24, 2008

Cycling is a healthy exercise which can be taken up for joy, entertainment as well as for specific health benefits. It helps in the overall enhancement of health by involving almost all the muscles of the body. Regular cycling can improve fitness significantly by reducing obesity; risk of strokes; coronary heart disease along with helping in the boosting up of the entire immune system. However, while cycling, you should follow some given safety tips so as to experience the benefits of cycling without any unwanted accidents.

While many young people take up the activity of cycling, especially in the form of races, they generally tend to neglect basic traffic rules in a state of excitement. Keep your adrenalin rush under control and let your mind rule over your emotions as following basic traffic rules is a must to prevent road accidents while cycling. Following traffic signals, lane rules and basic cycling sense is a must. Always remember that safety is more important than speed thrill. You must have seen various riders wearing earphones while cycling. This is not a safe thing as it leads to a distraction of mind which in turn can lead to accidents. Always check whether your brakes are functioning right and have one hand on brakes at least so that any unwanted accident can be avoided.

Before undertaking the activity of cycling, always warm up your body so as to prevent muscle aches and spasms. Take a 30 minute warm up by jogging or by cycling at normal pace. This is necessary particularly before undertaking fast cycling. Follow the practice of beginning slowly and gradually increasing pace rather than taking off in high speed in the beginning itself. Just like warming up is essential, you can also cool down after a strenuous cycling schedule. This helps flush the lactic acid out of your muscles to cut down on soreness.

Follow these basic cycling safety tips so that you can enjoy the numerous benefits of cycling in a safe and healthy way.
