Risk Factors for Insomnia

insomniafactorEvery one of us must have faced a sleepless night sometimes or the other in our life. But chronic sleeplessness is a medical problem called as insomnia and there are various factors that can increase the chances of your suffering from this problem. This article will throw light on some of the common risk factors for insomnia.

You are at a higher risk for insomnia if you are a woman. This might sound like a gender bias but the truth is that women are more prone to insomnia due to hormonal fluctuations in their body.

Hormonal changes in the body take place during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause and women are thus more vulnerable to the problem of insomnia than men.

People who regularly work late till night and have a disrupted sleep cycle are the ones with a higher risk factor for insomnia. It has been found that people, who work in shifts and those who have to travel a lot, especially cross boundaries, are the ones more vulnerable to sleep related problems like insomnia. Stress and anxiety are the other main factors that can trigger insomnia.

Age is an important factor as old people often complain of sleepless nights. In addition, there are many medical problems that can lead to insomnia. Some of them include neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

People suffering from problems like diabetes and kidney disorders are also vulnerable to insomnia as such people have disrupted sleep cycle due to frequent urination. Similarly, problem like arthritis lead to chronic pain and discomfort which in turn adversely affects one’s sleep.

There are also certain medications that can increase one’s chances of suffering from sleepless nights.

It is important to be aware of the risk factors for insomnia so that one can find timely preventive solutions for this problem.
