December 2, 2008

Also known as “Tinea”, ringworm is a skin infection caused by fungus. It often leads to rashes with a ring-shape. However, it is not necessary that every ringworm infection will display itself through oval rash and it is also not necessary that every ring like infection is ringworm. Thus, it is necessary to get a proper diagnosis done for effective and timely treatment. Given below are some symptoms and causes for the occurrence of this fungal skin infection.

Though ringworms are more common in children, they can affect people of all age groups. They are usually caused by fungi called dermatophytes and they spread through touch or sharing of combs of infected person. It has been found that pets like cats and dogs are one of the main culprits responsible for spreading this infection in humans. Moreover, other causes include skin wounds, swimming pool, lack of protective fatty acids in the scalp and also sometimes, lack of personal hygiene. Ringworms of the scalp usually spread through sharing of combs.

Any problem, be it a physical disease or a skin infection, needs to be diagnosed and treated on time. Here are some symptoms of ringworm which will help you in its early diagnosis. Ringworm infections can make the skin area affected itchy and scaly. The skin appears unusually dark or light and the patch of the skin affected usually appears as a ring. When the scalp is infected, there is often an area of baldness. Moreover, the nails also become discolored, thick and even crumbled. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, you should get your skin infection immediately diagnosed to prevent the spread of infection to other parts of the body. Moreover, early detection implies early cure and thus healthy living.
