Psychiatric disorders in young people

Do you know that recently a study revealed that psychiatric disorders are very common among the people who fall under the age-group of 18-24 years whether they attend colleges or not. Certainly for almost large group of section, young adulthood is characterized by the pursuit of greater educational opportunities, employment prospects, and development of personal relationships and for others it is parenthood. Though these circumstances may offer one with opportunities for his or her growth but can also result in lot of stress that can precipitate the onset of psychiatric disorder in them.

You will be surprised to read that a total of 45.8 percent of college students and 47.7 percent of young adults not in college met the criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder. The most common disorder in college students is alcohol abuse, followed by personality disorder. In young adults not attending college, the most frequent disorder was personality disorders and nicotine dependence. College students are less likely to have diagnosed of drug-use disorder, nicotine dependence or bipolar disorder and are less likely to use tobacco. However, their risk of alcohol use disorder is greater. So you also keep a good check on your children lifestyle, so that they also do not fall under the web of psychiatric disorders, before it become too late for you to correct them.

Treatment rates have been also recorded low for all psychiatric disorders whether one attends college or not. You will be surprised to read that college students were less likely to receive treatment for alcohol or drug use disorders than those not in colleges. At the end of the article, we can say that psychiatric disorder is very much high in rate among the people who are at vulnerable development stages of their life.
