Prolonged Grief Disorder
Grief is a part of life. But when grief becomes prolonged and inseparable from your life, then it transforms into a psychological disorder, medically termed as prolonged grief disorder.
When your near and dear one dies, you are naturally overtaken by grief. Grief in itself is not bad; after all, it is a natural phenomenon and helps in giving vent to your inner emotions.
However, when grief becomes prolonged, it leads to a psychological imbalance and there are also various health risks that get associated with it.
A person suffering from prolonged grief disorder displays symptoms like social withdrawal and isolation. Such people refuse to participate in social gatherings and become reserved.
They seem to be overtaken by grief which in turn can also lead to suicidal tendencies. Such people are unable to move ahead with their life as they are unable to accept and overcome the bitter realities of life.
Prolonged grief disorder can also lead to various health problems like hypertension, heart problems, immunological dysfunction and even cancer. In some extreme cases, prolonged grief disorder can also lead to a physical disability like paralysis.
You can easily recognize a person suffering from prolonged grief disorder by looking at him. Such people seem lost, dazed and emotionless. There are also some people who develop behavioral changes and become bitter, aggressive and angry in their behavior.
They can also suffer from frequent mood swings. In addition, prolonged grief disorder can also lead to depression.
It is important for people suffering from prolonged grief disorder to come out of their grief and move ahead with their lives. Emotional help and support of friends and relatives is extremely important for such people.
In addition, there are also specific treatments that can help a person effectively deal with grief.
