Problems Caused by Fibroids

January 6, 2009

Many women suffer from the problem of fibroids which are non cancerous tumors in and around the reproductive organs. Uterine fibroids are the most common and are a major reason that forces women to have hysterectomy. However, there are also many women who do not get fibroids removed and continue living with them. While fibroids are non cancerous, they can lead to other medical problems. Such problems are listed below in detail.

The most common symptom and also a problem associated with fibroids is heavy menstrual bleeding. Heavy bleeding is also often accompanied by clots. These in turn can lead to mild to severe cramping. Usually, heavy bleeding is caused by fibroids deep within the walls of the uterus and also by those which are just under the inner lining of the uterus. However, heavy bleeding can also be caused by various other gynecological problems.

Anemia is another problem associated with fibroids. Due to heavy bleeding, women with fibroids seem to have low Hb count which in turn leads to fatigue, headaches and other medical problems associated with anemia. A major problem with fibroids is that of infertility. Women with fibroids have relatively lower chances of becoming pregnant and it also increases risk of miscarriages. Thus, it is advisable to get your fibroid treated before you plan to become pregnant. Pelvic pain is another problem caused by fibroids.

Fibroids generally cause sensations of pressure or discomfort in the pelvis. With the growth of fibroids, they also tend to exert pressure on other organs. If the pressure exerted is in your bladder, then you will have frequent urges to urinate. The best way to treat your problem of fibroids is through consultation of your doctor. While some women need to get their fibroids surgically removed, there are also many who continue living with them as long as they do not lead to serious health consequences.
