Preparing your child for school
July 15, 2008
The first day of a child’s school is often greeted with a lot of howls and cries by the child. The first day in a school means the first time a child moves out from the protective shelter of the parent’s home to a completely new and an unknown territory. Thus, it is natural for a child to feel afraid, cranky and angry at the same time. While some children get used to the new surroundings in a few days, some take a longer time in adjusting. Parent’s role becomes pivotal in making the child understand and feel comfortable in the new environment which would eventually mould him into a successful and a responsible human being.
The best way to prepare your child for school is by taking the child to visit the new school before the term starts. This would ensure that the child gets accustomed to this new environment before embarking into an important phase of his life. Similarly, as a parent you should continuously encourage your child for schools by telling him about its various positives along with providing him with picture books and videos of schools which would attract him towards the latter. School is a place of learning while playing and this thought should be instilled in the mind of the child so as to motivate him towards schooling. Moreover, it is always better if your child can make a new friend of the same school before going there. This would provide him with a feeling of comfort as well as security. Parents should also indulge in school shopping with the child and colorful and attractive notebooks and pencils can be bought to increase the child’s interest in studying.
It is very natural for a child to cry on his first day of school. Thus, as a parent you should be firm and should leave the child with the school authorities. A child cries more in front of his parents and thus, one should let alone the child with other children to learn to adapt to the new surroundings. In addition, one should set up a proper routine of sleeping and getting up so that the child does not feel low, tired or lazy in the morning. Schooling is an important phase in a child’s life as it provides the child with the wings of freedom along with roots of intellect, discipline and hard work to succeed in life. Thus, as a parent you should take all adequate steps to lay a strong foundation for your child’s future.
