Postnatal Depression
August 22, 2008
Giving birth to a new life is the most ecstatic moment in a woman’s life. Every woman waits for this moment of life when a healthy baby is safely delivered and brought into this world. However, there are some women who face postnatal depression weeks or months after childbirth. Postnatal depression is different from ‘baby blues’ which is a condition in which the mother feels like crying without any reasons. However, these ‘blues’ last only for some time and occur within the first week after childbirth. In contrast, postnatal depression is a condition which occurs weeks or months after delivery and it is often characterized by the new mothers feeling anxious, irritated, less energetic, indecisive and even guilty. The symptoms of postnatal depression are very similar to those experienced in normal depression and one needs support, love and care of the near and dear ones to come out of this problem.
According to research, almost 10 to 15% of new mothers face the problem of postnatal depression which can be caused by a number of factors. The most common among these is stress, tiredness and hormonal changes which occur during pregnancy along with the confusing and even physically and emotionally draining period of pregnancy and childcare. PND is more common in women who have had previous episodes of depression or if one has a family history of this problem. In addition, having experienced emotional or physical stress, unhealthy environment at home or the birth of an unhealthy baby are other factors which can lead to the development of this problem.
Postnatal depression is a problem which can be treated like any other normal depression as it primarily requires love and support of family members and friends. Instead of being reserved, one should be encouraged to vent out one’s feelings and emotions. Discussing about your problem or worries with your near and dear ones and eating a well balanced diet can help in the treatment of PND. In some cases, even antidepressants are required but they should be taken only after thorough consultation with the doctor. Postnatal depression is a problem which is becoming common in new mothers due to the immense stress and strains of life but this is a problem which can be prevented as well as treated through emotional support and love.
