Peptic Ulcers
Peptic Ulcers are ulcers or sores which are formed in the stomach or on the upper part of the small intestine called the duodenum. They lead to a damage of the inner lining of the stomach and are caused basically by the bacterium, Helicobacter pylori. However, other problems like excessive production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach or Crohn’s disease can also lead to the problem of peptic ulcers. The symptoms of this disease are often described as indigestion, heartburn, hunger pangs or dyspepsia. As against the common perception that ulcers become more common as one grows old, it has been found that peptic ulcers can affect people of any age or gender. It is due to this reason that many children also suffer from this painful problem.
Peptic ulcers can turn dangerous and their warning signs include difficulty in swallowing, blood vomiting, unintended weight loss, anemia and sudden pangs of pain in the abdominal region. While stress and certain drugs and food items can lead to the formation of peptic ulcers, it has been found that most ulcers are caused by H.Pylori infection or by the use of common anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. Intake of citric drinks, spicy or smoked food can aggravate the pain associated with peptic ulcers. One should report this problem to the doctor and get it treated so as to avoid further complications.
As it is rightly said that prevention is better than cure, one should try to prevent the formation of peptic ulcers by taking few precautions. If you are a chain smoker with alcoholic inclination, you are at a higher risk of this disease. Thus, one should try to quit smoking and reduce the intake of alcohol to keep one’s stomach in a healthy condition. Similarly, one should seek advice from doctors before consuming NSAIDs or aspirin if you think you are more prone to ulcers. Consulting a doctor and getting a medical test and treatment done is essential to ward off this problem of peptic ulcer which can hamper one’s healthy and happy life.
