Parkinsons Disease

October 22, 2008

Primarily affecting your movement or motor coordination, Parkinson’s disease occurs when nerve cells in a particular area of brain die or become impaired. Time is not a healing force for them as this is a progressive disease which implies that the symptoms worsen with every passage of time. However, it is sudden but slow and gradual. Being more common in men, Parkinson’s usually begins around the age of 60. Read ahead and get acquainted with the symptoms and treatment of this disease.

While there is no particular cause associated with this disease, it is generally believed that genetic mutations and environmental toxins can lead to it. Parkinson’s disease develops gradually and it usually begins with a tremor usually in one hand. The tremor is accompanied by freezing or slowing down of movements. They are weaker and tired with slowness and gradual restriction of movement. Over time, this disease reduces the ability to initiate voluntary movement.  Even the simplest of all tasks would take a longer time to get completed. Walking steps also become shortened. There is muscle stiffness which accompanies Parkinson’s. This stiffness usually occurs in limbs and neck. Imbalance and stooped posture are also common symptoms of this problem. Many people with Parkinson’s disease have problem with speech. In the later stages of Parkinson’s disease, some people develop problems with memory and mental clarity. While Parkinson’s disease usually affects movement and motor co-ordination and strength, its secondary symptoms include disorders of mood, behavior, thinking and sensation.

While there is still no permanent cure for Parkinson’s disease, there are medications available for the treatment of its symptoms, particularly those associated with walking, tremor and even emotional and mood disorders. Physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy are other alternate therapies which help in coping up with this problem.
