Understanding Osteoporosis:
Osteoporosis is a disease to which women are more vulnerable than men. It is a bone disease caused by the reduction of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in one’s body. In this kind of a disease, the inside of the bones become porous and weak and thus become more susceptible to fractures and breakage. This disease stems from a loss of calcium and eventually leads to a gradual losing of bone mass. Since biologically women have less bone mass than men due to a difference in physical energies, they become more vulnerable to this kind of disease and especially the risk factor increases after menopause. This is due to the fact that the rate of bone loss increases after menopause due to the fall in estrogen levels. Estrogen is an important constituent for the absorption and utilization of calcium in one’s body.

Prevention is better than cure”
Osteoporosis is a disease which can drastically affect one’s smooth life as it can lead to multiple fractures, shooting pains and immobilization. However, this is a disease which can be easily prevented by following a healthy and a nutritious lifestyle. Since calcium plays a significant role in the strengthening of bones, a daily intake of calcium and Vitamin D- rich diet should be kept in mind since one’s early age. In addition, multiple studies have shown that a higher bone mass can be achieved through daily and simple exercises of walking, stepping and jogging. In addition unhealthy habits of tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking should be avoided to lead a healthy and a disease-free life.

Medication
For those already suffering from Osteoporosis, it is not the end of the road. There are medications available which prevent further bone loss thereby reducing the risk of fractures. These include hormones like calcitonin, teriparatide and medicinal drugs like alendronate, ibandronate sodium and raloxifine amongst others. However, this medication should be taken strictly under doctor’s supervision. Moreover, there is also an Estrogen Replacement therapy available which is recommended only under doctor’s advice.
