Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

October 23, 2009

ObsessiveCompulsoryDisorderSome people are constantly worried, anxious, and tensed and they seem to be always surrounded with a negative ‘what if’ aura. People suffering from such symptoms are said to be suffering from the problem of obsessive compulsory disorder.

Such people have excessive worries and they tend to perform some repetitive actions to ensure that everything is in place and under control.

Also, such people find their brains getting stuck on a particular thought, which often is irrational and even irrelevant.

For instance, a person suffering from Obsessive Compulsory Disorder can have a fear of falling sick or catching infection. This leads them to constantly wash their hands and keep themselves clean and hygienic.

However, such people perform such acts in extreme and it becomes an obsession and a compulsion for them. Thus, hand-washing becomes a fear and a compulsion, more than a habit.

After having understood what obsessive compulsory disorder is, let’s look at some of its causes. Though this problem has no particular cause associated with it, it is believed that obsessive compulsory disorder is usually inherited.

However, social, environmental, and behavioral factors too play an important role, especially factors like personality development and response of an individual to a particular problem and situation.

People with Obsessive Compulsory Disorder have a sense of helplessness as despite being aware of their problem, they are unable to overcome it.

They are unable to move beyond their compulsions and performing repetitive tasks everyday also leads to draining away of energy. Thus, such people find themselves lagging behind in their personal and professional life. Also, it has been found that such people have a danger of falling into depression.

There are certain medicines available to treat the problem of Obsessive Compulsory Disorder. In addition, cognitive behavior therapy is also helpful.
