Natural Treatment for Brittle Nails

July 3, 2008

Many women face with the problem of brittle nails which in turn are weak and thin nails which break off quite easily. It is generally characterized by a vertical splitting of the nails or by the separation of the nail plate layers. Though this problem is often associated with aging, one can also develop brittle nails due to repeated exposure to chemicals, detergent and water. Moreover, they may also be an indicator of an underlying problem like Raynaud’s disease, Hypothyroidism, lung problems, tuberculosis as well as skin infections. Due to these underlying threats, it is always advisable to consult a doctor before trying natural and herbal treatments for the same.

Helpful Natural Treatments
Research has found out that Vitamin B Biotin can help in increasing the thickness of brittle nails thereby reducing their tendency to split and break. To get biotin in one’s diet, one should have a glass of milk with servings of corn, barley, cauliflower and legumes such as peanuts and soybeans. In addition, the mineral silicon can be used to improve the condition of brittle nails. It is advised to keep one’s nail plate layers hydrated with the help of a good quality cuticle and nail oil that contains Jojoba and Vitamin E as two of the botanical oils.

Many doctors advice the supplementation of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, niacin, calcium and iron for the improvement of brittle nails. A diet rich in proteins can also prove to be helpful in such conditions.
One should take precautions while performing household chores to keep one’s nail strong and healthy. This can be done by wearing gloves, especially those of vinyl, as vinyl helps to keep the water off from one’s skin. In addition, one should keep one’s nails short and sweet as short nails are less likely to split and break.
