Natural Skin Care for Dry Skin

June 25, 2008

Dry skin refers to a condition in which the skin loses its moisture and gives a parched or a cracked look. Dry skin condition is generally attributed to environmental factors like the low humidity and dryness associated with winters and also with extreme hot and dry summer weather. Excessive bathing, heating and use of harsh and strong soaps can also lead to the condition of dryness. Moreover, the condition of dry skin is also a genetic one and is also caused by the deficiency of nutrients like vitamin A and B. People with skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis are more susceptible to the condition of dryness. The inability of the skin to retain moisture gives it a dull, cracked and a scaly look. However, there are natural and herbal methods available through which one can revitalize one’s skin and make it shine and glow with health.
A healthy drink for a glowing skin

A regular intake of a glass of warm milk mixed with 2 teaspoons of almond oil should be taken as a natural treatment for dry skin. In addition, one can blanch lemon grass and drink it several times a day to achieve the same effect.

Natural face-masks

A healthy face-mask to cure dry skin can be made by adding 1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon of orange juice and 1 teaspoon of olive oil along with adding few drops of rose water and some drops of lime juice. This paste can be applied on the face in the morning hours before one takes a bath.
Another face-mask can be made by mixing 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of honey, ½ teaspoon of olive oil and few drops of rose water.
A face wash for dry skin can be made by blanching scented geranium leaves in boiling water, straining them and then using it after it has cooled down.

Oils that help

The rubbing of coconut oil or avocado oil on the afflicted area can help to heal one’s dry skin. Moreover, after shower, the use of sesame oil on skin can be helpful to prevent the dryness of skin.

Recommended diet

One should eat a balanced diet vegetables, fruits (especially yellow and orange ones as they are high in beta-carotene), grains and seeds. Increase in the intake of raw foods along with the consumption of items like garlic, onions, eggs and asparagus help in keeping the skin smooth, silky and youthful.
