October 24, 2008

Do you that people often relate number of myths to twin pregnancy or births, but it’s very important to bust those myths for a safe delivery and healthy child. Here are some myths decoded for your benefit-just read them out!

# Myth:
You can’t breastfeed multiples. If you do, never use bottles.

Fact:
Mothers who breastfeed multiples report that the judicious use of formula as supplementation, in times of illness or fatigue, prolongs the duration of the breastfeeding period.

Impact:
Mothers of multiples who are willing to breastfeed are discouraged from attempting it, which often leads to low-birth weight infants. Secondly, they miss regular physical contact with their mother, something which promotes mother-child bonding.

# Myth
In every pair, there’s a good and a bad twin

Fact:
The relationship of twins is a dynamic interplay of personality variables. Twins are children who get along well with each other more or less. Young twin experiment with their relationship-being ‘leader and follower,’ as often as every hour. With good upbringing, multiples are capable of developing a mature, reciprocal relationship.

Impact:
obstetricians, nurses and parents label co-twins ‘good’ and ‘bad’ or other positive/negative stereotypes, which damage their relationship.

# Myth:

Twins shares everything

Fact:
Even though they have shared a womb, twins learn to share their toys gradually. First, each develops a sense of ownership of their clothes and some toys. Once a child understands the concept of ‘mine’ she or he begins to lend and trade.

Impact:
Parents and caretakers place children’s clothes and toys together, thereby retarding the development of self-esteem. This also promotes an endless round of competition between children.

Make sure you clear all the doubts and myths relating to twins along with their impacts in your mind by reading the above statements thoroughly.
