Myths related with mental illness-read them out

December 31, 2008

Very often, many of us relate certain myths and beliefs with the problem of mental illness. But believe me, some of those statements bear no truth in themselves and therefore it is very important to debunk these myths so that proper treatment for curing mental illness can be taken. Here, in this article, some of the myths related with mental illness are written below- just read them out!

Many people believe that being mentally ill means that the person is crazy. But that’s not true at all. It only means that one is suffering from a mental disorder which needs to get cured. Using cruel labels like crazy or physic only causes the pain and discourages the people from seeking help.

People believe that one suffering from a mental illness can ‘pull himself or herself out of it’. But the fact is mental illness is not caused by personal weakness nor it can be cured by willpower. Proper treatment is needed for curing mental illness.

Many consider that people with mental illness always remain ill. Remember that for some people, a mental illness may be a lifelong condition, like diabetes. But as with diabetes, proper treatment enables many people with a mental illness to lead fulfilling lives.

Are people with a mental illness are often violent? Well the truth is people with a mental illness are much more likely to be victims of violence than its cause. With proper treatment, people with a mental illness are no more likely to be violent than the general population.

Many of us think that children don’t suffer from mental illness. But that’s absolutely false! Millions of children are affected by depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses. Getting prompt treatment is essential.

Many of us believe that mental illness can’t affect us. But the fact is that mental illness can affect anyone irrespective of sex, age group etc.
