Milk Allergy in Infants

June 16, 2009

milkallergyThere are many children who suffer from milk allergies. This is because the immune system of such children takes milk and the protein present in it as something harmful, making the body adversely react to it. This article will talk about the symptoms of milk allergies in infants and how one can overcome it.

Though milk allergies happen in adults too, they are more common in children. The protein fractions in milk are the main components that lead to a milk allergy. Here are some common symptoms which are usually associated with a milk allergy in infants.

Infants with a milk allergy often show certain skin reactions. Their skin becomes itchy and often inflamed. Many infants with milk allergy get a swelling on their lips and even tongue. In addition, certain skin problems like eczema and allergic problems like asthma can also be caused by milk allergies.

Along with skin reactions and allergies, milk allergies also lead to various other symptoms like vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea (even motions with blood in it), gas and acidity, and general irritability. Infants can also have a runny nose and respiratory problems like that of wheezing and asthma as a symptom of milk allergy.

Usually such symptoms, especially those of vomiting and diarrhea, start within minutes of milk intake. In severe cases, a child may suffer from anaphylaxis which can adversely affect the breathing and blood pressure of a child, leading to serious consequences.

If you find the above given symptoms in your child, then you must consult a doctor. Usually, children overcome the problem of milk allergy with age. In addition, it has been found that if you breast feed a child, he will have less chances of developing a milk allergy in comparison to children who are formula fed.
