Medicinal Value of Basil Leaves

Also known as Holy Tulsi, Basil is a herb which is quite common in the Indian culture. It is specie of small mint plant considered pious in India and the leaves of basil have numerous oil glands with aromatic volatile oil. Along with being sacred, the leaves of basil have great medicinal value and can be used to treat a variety of ailments and diseases. It has antioxidant properties which help in boosting up the body’s ability to fight off damaging free cells which could lead to various diseases. Moreover, it strengthens the immune system and helps the body to fight the effects of ongoing stress along with balancing the mind, nerves and emotions of a person.

People with respiratory problems are often advised the natural cure of using basil leaves as the latter helps in protecting the entire respiratory tract by maintaining the health of throat, chest and lungs. People suffering from cold and fever can get relief through the natural treatment of basil. For this, one needs to take around 7 basil leaves and 5 cloves and one should boil this in one glass of water which should be drunk with an addition of some salt. Moreover, Tulsi is also used as an important ingredient in many cough syrups due to its natural ability to treat cold, flu and asthma.

Basil leaves are also beneficial for curing stomachache, cramps and stomach worms. Consuming one spoon each of basil and ginger juice helps in the treatment of cramps and stomachache. Similarly, basil leaves are also beneficial for the treatment of acidity and piles. Along with being good for the body, Tulsi is also beneficial for the health of one’s skin as it contains Vitamin C, carotene, calcium and phosphorous which help in keeping the skin supple and healthy. Thus, basil is a highly beneficial herb due to its holy value and associated medicinal properties which help in the overall well being of a person.
